Listened to this over the weekend again. I love the over all show and sound of the release. Only thing I disapprove of is the use of the Horns on Murder Inc. Some tunes shouldn't have horns at all, Adam is another. Some tunes just need more guitar!
I've listened to this show twice already and there's a lot here to unpack, and it's all so good. 'Stolen Car' is perfect and 'Loose Ends' is sooo good! Great show
I was driving home, and found myself enjoying Waitin On a Sunny Day immensely... This doesn't happen very often... I'm just loving the horns so much... Less is perhaps more, but with Springsteen less is perfect, and more is just mind blowing. I would like to attend another show in this format.
@Louisa He has been rocking Johnny since at least 2009 ....and even a version i heard in 2003 was pretty rocking ....I think they call that one the Hoedown version
@Louisa As ENJ states, that arrangement of Johnny 99 was a regular feature in 2009. Except it rocked harder back then, and there were no horns. (Best example of it is probably the Hyde Park performance, available on Bruce's You Tube channel if you don't own the DVD or Blu Ray). I quite liked the 2009 version, I thought it still had a bit of the dark grit the song needs, but for me the horns take it a step too far. I agree that buries the spirit of the song.
I've said once or twice in the last month that November 7th, 2009 has increased my love of the November 8th show, and this release has done similar. I'm currently obsessed listening to "Stolen Car" and "I'm a Rocker" and can't stop listening to all of the versions we've got of them.
I can completely understand the 'frustrations' some have about song repetition in the series, but there are so so many times when I've been grateful for it.
@Louisa Looking at my Apple Music, they're the only ones I have on there too 😄 I have the Washington and Brisbane shows where it was played stored away.
OMG @Mario Brega You wrote the article on Backstreets??? Holy shit, thats amazing. I loved it, and then I saw your name. Wow. Congrats on being published.
@Mario Brega just read your write up on Backstreets. Of course it's good, your reviews always are, but I felt immensely proud of seeing your name underneath. Well done squire.
@Louisa For as much as I want the rest of the tour dropped someday, I do love these seasonally listens to a specific show.
Last night it hit me that in eleven months time we'll be ten years gone from this tour (frightening stuff). Even though my memory isn't crystal clear anymore as to what I was doing in July, September and November 2012 before, during and after these shows, all I know is that when I press play and listen to them, they bring some sort of memory back to me, even if I can't properly unravel it.
Stolen car has just gutted me. This is so good. Trying to find the string that binds the first 7 songs together and I am willing to just say it's random, but we all know nothing is really random in its ability to move or amaze me. This tour was a comeback, playing without C to his right, his anchor was gone. We find a way. We take care of our own. Indeed.
This 'Devils And Dust' might be one of my favourite moments from the Reunion Era, I've listened to its bootleg a thousand times. Can't wait to listen to the official audio!
And Bruce talking about the 'ghosts' in "My City of Ruins". I know he mentions them in the Meadowlands, but after Letter To You it's just so much more striking.
Hopefully I won't stray too far from this show, but I watched High Society for the first time last night - I didn't say I wouldn't stray! And with Sinatra being Sinatra, I've been reading up on him, listening to some music when I've gotten a moment today.
I was reminded of Bruce's cover of "Angel Eyes", and in his speech beforehand he mentions the first time he heard his music: "Coming out of a jukebox, it was in a dark bar on a Sunday afternoon when my mother and I went in searching for my father." That was over twenty years before Broadway, and I just think it's incredible how every fragment of Bruce's career, every speech and performance, can be connected. This "My City of Ruins", the 'ghosts' and Letter To You is another example.
And while I was typing all of that "Youngstown" and "Murder Inc." rocked! Yeah!
Yeah, listening to the original River tour releases from Nugs, it's amazing how much of the stories he tells in those shows are echoed years later in the Broadway shows.
It's been a while since I shared my thoughts about a new Archive in an actual post instead of a blog*, so here goes...
This show is class! I enjoy revisiting select tracks from the birthday show earlier in this stand, but that one still hasn't hit me like many releases do immediately. (I did say back in June 2019 that it was a sleeper mind). This one, on the other hand, feels so vibrant and thrilling. Could that have something to do with one being a stadium show and the other being inside an arena? Does that actually impact our audio experiences? I'm not too sure, it might be something to look into.
"Devils" is just starting now. I've listened to it a bunch of times this week on YouTube, likewise with "Stolen Car", but hearing them in this audio quality. Damn, it's like an entirely different song. I've been focusing on the band's playing and Bruce's solos the last couple of days, but his vocal is standing out to me tonight.
*There mightn't be a full blog post write-up for this one. I haven't really decided what I'm going to do yet, because I wrote the Backstreets review for this release and right now I'm happy enough with that.
**I've still updated Part 4 of the Guide and I'll be adding a rating and a couple of song recommendations later in the week.
I should be fine to keep reading and contributing to the rumours thread for the foreseeable, as I expect I'd only find out the show in advance if I'm asked to help out again - "has Mario said anything?" could potentially be a fun new game leading up to release day.
I'll be honest in saying I was really worried this week that somebody was going to randomly and successfully predict St. Paul outta nowhere. I was thinking it would've been my head if so!
I have very unrefined taste. I don't Jazz,Scotch, Cigars or for the most part ....Acoustic Bruce. At my age that's not likely to change. Looking forward to hearing the full band D and D.
Lol .... Great point JF..... I remember my best Bruce Bud and i getting Nebraska on release day ...We picked up a dime bag on the way to his basement apartment in Brooklyn...to rock out.... My joke has always been its a good thing it was a basement apartment or i might have jumped. Open All Night helped a little. And the words are so great ....so much fun to sing along to while trying to find a spot to catch your breath
I was ambivalent toward Nebraska until I got out on the road and heard it in wide open spaces, listening to it through those shitty 80s stock Walkman headphones in my camps.
This E Street version of Devils & Dust is remarkable. As much as I love Springsteen's quieter solo records, I hear something like this or electric The Ghost Of Tom Joad and Youngstown, and I can't help wondering what might have been. Electric Nebraska? I'd honestly rather hear an electric take on The Ghost Of Tom Joad. The first thing I ever read about that album before it came out was Landau saying it was "Steinbeck meets Darkness On The Edge Of Town. His description is fair, but I was expecting a rock record.
Love the Horns.

This archive is spot on. I played it again today. Wow, just wow.
OMG @Mario Brega You wrote the article on Backstreets??? Holy shit, thats amazing. I loved it, and then I saw your name. Wow. Congrats on being published.
Honestly enjoying this Archive more than the Gothenburg one.
Pay Me My Money Down.
I just had about all the fun a man can have alone at a campfire with his jeans on.
Amazingly, there are people who don't like Loose Ends...
"Loose Ends", "Something in the Night", "Stolen Car", "Devils & Dust," "Youngstown" - is it too early to start this year's top 10? 😁
Stolen car has just gutted me. This is so good. 3:55 to 4:05 of "Youngstown". ESSENCE.
None of the previously released live versions of Loose Ends satisfied me like this one does. It might be a perfect rendition.

A fantastic Something In The Night.

Three shows in the last six weeks is the best thing about this miserable season. I need all the Bruce I can get lately.
I like it, alot.
