A week later and I continue to blast this fabulous song multiple times every day.If the rest of the album hits me even 10% as much this song has....we’re talking E Street Gold.
I find the song uplifting, also. Although causing sweet pain, I also feel a direct kick in my ass each time I'm listening. Bruce is telling us how short life is, so let's not waste any time...
Fantastic song. The video is great but makes me sad, it feels like a farewell. Sad because it's coming to an end, sad because I didn't get to experience most of it, but happy I got to experience some of it and got to see him in concert with my dad once, which was a night I'll never forget. Holding on to the faintest of hopes that I might be able to see him again at least one more time.
This one got me from first listen. It was the Youtube w/lyrics first...which is good, as I generally check out the 'sound' of a song before digging into the lyrics. Anyway - I 'got it' right away and applied the story in the song to my own life and loss of friends and family. Of course, when it comes to music and Bruce in particular that's gonna mean Miami MArk/Welby for me. So, yea a couple tears were shed that first listen and subsequent ones....but it was good tears. To me the song is celebrating the singers lost friends...missing them of course, but remembering the good stuff without it being a downer....quite the opposite....it's up-lifting.
So...for first time in many moons I was cranking this song up for multiple listens...about 6 times on ride home...with the windows open and the song loud. IMO this is one of Bruce's best songs in in many years. Not an epic or anything...but for the music alone this one is a stand out. I've probably listened to this song 25 times by now....it's that good.
I see a trend... With amazing endings. I think I noticed it first with Hello Sunshine last year. He stops singing and lets the music take over. It's perfect.
I'll post what I said over at the other place:Wow! I just listened to it for the first time. I got shivers and started smiling during the first chorus and those shivers barely left me during the rest of the song...This is the Bruce I love the most! That chorus is one of his best and most soaring in ages! An instant modern day Bruce classic for me! I'm so happy that I really liked this!
If I were to nitpick I would want the song to end just before the la-la-la's though. I like that part in itself, but to me the song feels fulfilled already before that part starts. I think the 80's Bruce would've ended the song before that part, but this is 10's Bruce...Which is fine since the song is so great anyway. <3 Also: While I have nothing against Soozie Tyrell or strings in general, I'm so glad that we probably will mostly get piano, guitar and organ melodies this time around instead of something like the Lonesome day or Waitin' on a sunny day strings. They're beautiful too, but generally I kinda get tired of that type of sound more easily compared to piano or guitar melodies.
Give me two, three original Jake solos on top of all that and I'll be more than happy.
For obvious reasons, I hear Clarence in Jake and I miss Clarence so I appreciate Jake. He's done better than anyone expected in his uncle's spot on the stage so let's hear him rip something on record that is his, but still channels The Big Man.
If that sounds like I'm looking for ghosts, I blame Bruce Springsteen.
Dove into this sucker again last night, so much so that when I awoke this morning the chorus wouldn't leave my skull - good sign when a song gets so stuck like that. This song is a perfect example of when a song achieves supreme greatness nearing the end, it's almost astonishing just how good the latter part of the song is. Hearing this blasting on the radio or in the car driving I know for a fact will have some of my friends declaring Bruce as a pure Rock God, nothing less. Also, Letter To You played on repeat for a while last night too, the music is what is winning for me in these two songs, that and Bruce voice on Letter, so bloody strong.
These two songs make me appreciate Western Stars even more. There's just something about all of this new music that fills me with so much joy, and I can't wait to play "Letter To You", "Ghosts", "Tucson Train", "Sundown", those other delights we've had since last June as well as those we're getting on October 23rd during these cold, dark and dreary nights ahead.
Just as I logged in to this page the song came on the radio - so much for not listening to it. Wonder what the second hearing will be like. Does he vocalise with himself on the first verse? Just checked - no - that's what made it sound so flat first time round. Sounded better this time.
Regarding the video, as much fun as the glimpses of archival live footage in these Thom Zimny videos and docos are, is anyone else starting to get frustrated by that whole teasing gambit?
FFS, if you have it, just release it already. If sound and picture quality aren't quite up to the levels expected of a DVD / Blu Ray release, or the clips are not complete or whatever, put them out on You Tube.
There seems to be No Nukes footage in this video that isn't from the songs in the original NN movie... my God man, if you're sitting on decent quality footage of more of those shows, don't just slip 2 seconds of vision into a video clip. Let us see the real thing.
I've listened to "Ghosts" a couple of times now and I'm not that keen.
I'm clearly on my own here in finding it a bit depressing.
I'm alive and I'm out here on my own I'm alive and I'm coming home
Sounds like it's lonely being the only one left alive, and he's looking forward to "coming home" aka dying. Sorry. I don't like the la-la-las at the end either - I could see that going on for a boringly long time live.
In my interpretation "I'm alive and I'm coming home" is not him talking about dying. A grave or Heaven is not his home. Bruce says he's alive and that he - on the other side of this epidemic - will get back home on stage with The E Street Band!
@The Imposter He had dead people in their graves claiming to be alive in "We Are Alive" though. That song really gave me the creeps. I can't think of a worse nightmare than being buried alive, and then he had to finish it with by sampling "Ring Of Fire", of all things! Were they all burning in hell? What was he thinking!
I like the first two songs released from Letter to You than the first two from WS so I hope that bodes well for the whole album. But will it have the equivalent of the classics Moonlight Motel, WS and 'Orses.
Thumps up on this sucker. Not in a lyrical sense really, not sure they do much for me at this point, but the beautiful melodies and the hooks-a-plenty with a great chorus are enough for me - it's gonna sound damn fine when I'm in an altered state and crank it as loud as I can.
It seems that most people are satisfied! This song has reached me a lot. You have shared interesting analyzes, and I think that in the end it is summarized in a tree from which many branches emerge: mortality. The mortality of yourself, of your friends, of the music you love, of the bands ... But it is not a sad song. It is as if he were saying: "Hey, our time is limited and many of ours are gone. But now we are alive! Alive and accompanied by all those who visit us in dreams. And, in the end, life is not like a dream? "It can be, so just sing along and create a bit of the timeless magic of love and R&R." That is what it transmits to me. And how wonderful to see Max in the backing vocals!
I keep contemplating the similarities between Blood Brothers and Ghosts. Not musically, of course. But both are about connection on a very personal level.
In Blood Brothers, Bruce sought to re-establish comraderie and friendship among the E-Street Band and remove some of the stumbling blocks between the members that had led to estrangement.
In Ghosts he tries to reach out to his younger days and keep the memory alive of those who have passed.
In both instances he shows the necessity to clear away the cobwebs that can settle on personal relationships. It makes his need to be grounded very moving - I guess that's why the new song makes even some grown men cry, to coin a phrase.
Oh ... guess what's just come on the radio - Ken Bruce show. I knew I shouldn't have listened to the Tracks of my Years bit. I decided to just let it play.
I like the chorus on first listen - verses are musically boring - imho. He could have altered the last line a little.
Still looking forward to the album although a little less so now.
I know that first verse is about The Castiles and George Theiss, but "stone and the gravel in your voice" has me wondering if that line isn't a reference to his own, much younger self. Maybe the ghost of that kid comes in his dreams, too.
I'm thinking that in this song Bruce, and The E Street Band, are the ghosts of their younger selves, 'visiting' these young upstarts in their dreams and during their live performances. The song is sang from the perspective of both Bruce's. One is thrilled and stunned by the other wearing familiar clothing and singing with gravelly vocals ('where did they come from?'), and one is sending a message to a potentially frustrated and depressed young man that it's all going to be fine.
One day he'll be where he needs to be, he'll be alive. "Just keep doing what you're doing, for the both of us."
I was going to ask this on the other site but I can no longer make any comments on the site for some reason. Don't know if it's a glitch or personal but literally can't even type in a question sooo....
Have any of you ever spotted yourself in footage of a concert used in one of Bruce's videos? I haven't. I was just thinking about it watching the Ghosts clip.
I make a very brief cameo on the Rock In Rio Lisboa 2016 live stream! For like 1 second during 'Working On The Highway', I believe! They almost only filmed the first lines and I was like on the 5th or 6th line, but since I'm a tall guy I spotted myself later on the video. 😁
I’ve been in a funk. A bit depressed at the state of the world. My thoughts keep wandering back to the brother I lost this year and my best friend McSorley Light who left us way too soon. And somehow, as he has done ever since I was in High School, Bruce Springsteen rescued me. Even though I’m on the wrong side of middle age and he’s 71, he rescued me.
Ghosts Went from my ears through my veins and into my heart, screaming I’M ALIVE. Waking me, shaking me and taking me to that place that can only be reached by traveling down E Street. Freaking brilliant.
One of the things I love about the two songs released is the vocals - none of the double tracked vocals we saw on the likes of WOAD etc, just pure live vocals.
Love it. A very life-affirming song and video. I'm not sold on "feel the blood shiver in my bones" line, seems a bit odd. Love all the footage of the fans and the older footage of the band. He's still got it!
I don't know that it has anything to do with the phrase (which seems to be one Bruce has coined), but Mystic Island in Ocean County, New Jersey is also referred to as Mystic.
Now I am a bit more composed I can write. I think this will join Moonlight Motel, Across the Border, Matamoros Banks, Blood Brothers, The Wall and Land of Hope and Dreams in being a song that I know will lead to a tear welling up. How many times I hear it. It is not just the video of The Castilles and knowing they have passed. All those ghosts given flesh in song and while Bruce is with us he'll tell their stories and carry their legacy.
Both videos are overly nostalgic, this album seems to be targeted at his hard core fan base... This is a part of his magic trick, he can make us cry any fucking time he wants.
I’m still remaining strong and trying to defer my gratification until October 23rd, but reading this thread is not making that easy! Sounds like the new album is going to be the perfect antidote to a dreadful year. Bruce knows we need him more than ever and he’s delivered, he never lets us down.
I just have to say that I find it almost unbelievable that he can bring out the masterpiece which I believe WS is and then follow it up with something this good after all those years in the business. He truly is a God.
...I'm sorry, but holy shit! I did not expect this. I can't stop smiling, the song is so, so great.
I love the riff and the lyrics are really good, but man... That chorus is perfect. I got goosebumps when he sang the first "I'm alive" with all the backing vocals. Awesome. And I'm so happy to see everyone enjoying this new song! Some light on these dark times. 🙂
Plus, that video... So great to see the guys working together and getting this as the result. What a beautiful couple of videos we already got.
Well, off to listen to it on repeat for the next hour.
Nice melodic rocker with sooo much substance when you know what he is referring to and see the pictures of times long past.
It's very easy to fall for this - reminds me of the first listen to "The ties that bind" which had me immediately and faithfully in the fold of Bruce-followers.
And like most of Bruce’s great stuff you can put yourself in there as the singer and apply stuff or people from your own life....I’m very pleased...even though I got tears eyed.
I think this album will not be for me. I won’t go into detail as everyone seems to be excited and I don’t want to bum you out. I really hope you guys enjoy it!
@Tom Joad All great songs ..... I do tend to over react when i hear new Bruce .....but find the lyrics rather melancholy and moving for those of us who are getting older. I'm sure there will be a few songs on there for you too !!!!
@Tom Joad - your thoughts on it only add to the excitement of hearing it next month. I'll be interested to hear what doesn't appeal to some whilst making others so happy.
Anyone else got a great big goofy grin on there face? Wow. And I can totally see that being the opener the first time the E Street Band play live again finally.
Not often I can enjoy this 'live'... It's a public holiday here. My iTunes preorder said purchased until a minute ago when it changed to me being able to play the song... Here goes!
Looking forward to hearing it soon. I'm sure I'm not alone in looking at a new album and seeing which is the longest track on the record? This one is just under 6 minutes but I see the two longest songs on LTY are two of the older songs, If I was the Pries is 6:50 and Janey needs a Shooter a second shorter at 6:49.... Means nothing, just find it interesting.
I know writing and describing excessively is kinda my thing, but I can't properly convey just how much I needed those Stevie harmonies back in my life.
A nice song that I'm hoping to love as much as "Letter To You" with future listens.
I just sat there for 6 minutes grinning from ear to ear. E Street at its finest. Steve’s vocals, Jake’s Clarence, the entire song structure. It was just all brilliant.
I‘m trying to stick to my normal policy with new releases and listen to the pre released singles only once so as not to spoil the album - but god, I already want to listen again. Really well done Bruce and the band. This album is going to be mighty fine.
I am trying not to listen to either Letter or Ghosts again until we get the whole album. I have managed 5 days so far, so only another 10 to go...
This is the Bruce I know and love. It doesn't hurt that the ESB are on the top of their game.
A week later and I continue to blast this fabulous song multiple times every day. If the rest of the album hits me even 10% as much this song has....we’re talking E Street Gold.
This damn song doesn't leave my head! 😅 For the last two days it's been on repeat in my phone. I absolutely love it.
I find the song uplifting, also. Although causing sweet pain, I also feel a direct kick in my ass each time I'm listening. Bruce is telling us how short life is, so let's not waste any time...

"Think I'm going down to the well tonight and I'm gonna drink till I get my fill
And I hope when I get old I don't sit around thinking about it, but I probably will
Yeah just sitting back trying to recapture a little of the glory of
Well but time slips away and leaves you with nothing mister but boring stories of
Glory days"
Bruce foreshadowed writing these songs 36 odd years ago.
These two songs make me appreciate Western Stars even more. This is fantastic. Letter was good, but this is other level for me.
Although it reminded me of another song. Been bugging me all day, and I finally worked it out. Mainly the riff and the outros on both
I was going to ask this on the other site but I can no longer make any comments on the site for some reason. Don't know if it's a glitch or personal but literally can't even type in a question sooo....

This is "Where The Bands Were."
I haven't watched the video yet, looking forward to that.
Now we're talking! This is good!!!
I like it
And that video OMG! That's very nice
On a lighter note...Bruce with his, "one, two! One, two, three, four!" is channeling Ben Stiller and Legends of Springsteen😄
Two great sets of words now, both at the beginning of the song. That bothersome thread, and now the mystic far.
Now I am a bit more composed I can write. Second listen...
Aaaaaaaand I'm obsessed! 😁
LOVE IT!!!!
I keep hearing blood sugar instead of blood shiver... 😃

It's that riff that gets me. I'm feeling young again, but with all the good things from the past added on, if that makes sense?😍
I love the video, tears again!
...I'm sorry, but holy shit! I did not expect this. I can't stop smiling, the song is so, so great.

❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁😁
and that video!!!!!!!!
I’m loving this one....and it actually brought a couple tears to my eyes. Thanks Bruce....you still got it.
wow. Awesome.
I think this album will not be for me. I won’t go into detail as everyone seems to be excited and I don’t want to bum you out. I really hope you guys enjoy it!
Just watched the live premiere of a Springsteen video with 6300 of my closest friends. 😁
Anyone else got a great big goofy grin on there face? Wow. And I can totally see that being the opener the first time the E Street Band play live again finally.
This is not a test! This is ROCK 'n ROLL!!!!!!
Not often I can enjoy this 'live'... It's a public holiday here. My iTunes preorder said purchased until a minute ago when it changed to me being able to play the song... Here goes!
The comments posted on YT are amazing... Different languages, everybody so excited.
I haven't heard it yet, can't access itunes at the moment, YouTube at 4 pm, so in half an hour... Can't wait!
Listened to them back to back, I think this is going to be one helluva album!
Update: No longer singing "Living on the Edge of the World".
Now singing: "You'll Be Coming Down"
Looking forward to hearing it soon. I'm sure I'm not alone in looking at a new album and seeing which is the longest track on the record? A real Magic album feel to it.
I know writing and describing excessively is kinda my thing, but I can't properly convey just how much I needed those Stevie harmonies back in my life.
A nice song that I'm hoping to love as much as "Letter To You" with future listens.
Oh, and JAKEY!!!
On second listen, I concur with @BobbyJames. It is fantastic.
On first listen I like it a lot. Very E Street, it should keep those who like Bruce the Rocker happy.
It is fantastic. Fantastic chorus, easily the most pleased I’ve been with a Springsteen song on first listen for a long while. Fan. Tas. Tic.
I need it asap, if only for confirmation that it doesn't sound identical to "Living on the Edge of the World" like I think will.
AND AS I TYPE IT'S UP ON APPLE MUSIC.
I thought it would drop at 1pm UK time (just like Letter to You), but unfortunately it didn't.
It will drop two hours later, at 3pm! Here's the link:
Where is my song
Was this one also released an hour early on iTunes?
Feel like skipping this one - think I'm gonna wait to hear the whole thing while taking a drive in a couple of weeks. Like the good old days.
Looking forward to it!!
I'm ready, Bruce.
I won't be listening to it but looking forward to reading what others think.
Can't wait!
Do we know when we get this? Have I missed something?
Probably the song I have wanted to hear the most from Letter to You. I'm thinking it will be heavy on the keyboard.
Bring it on!
Let’s have it!
Wow, what a nice surprise!!!
Was just on my way here to mention this. Looking forward to it!
