I've read that it's a minute or so longer than this song, and Backstreets are also claiming 9 originals and 3 legendary outtakes. So I don't think it's a cover.
I love both the song and the video. I was determined not to listen to any of the new album in advance and wait until October 23rd, predictably though, I just couldn’t wait. Classic E Street Band sound.
Given the winter photos and the inclusion of early 70's songs, why the hell isn't Winter Song on there? Good lil tune, and would have been perfect on this. Not that I'm complaining...well, I am, aren't I. But not much!
I just don't understand the mentality behind constantly demanding more Tracks-style unreleased songs, then complaining when some are included on an album.
It's not Western Stars quality writing or production. A little generic 90's or 00's Springsteen sound/production. Judging from the video it's a full blown E Street recording - a big plus for some people I guess. I prefer when he tries to push the envelope a little and tries something new and different.
The apple-snippet lowered my expectations a bit. The River vibes/sound makes it sound like an out-take or a song by a Springsteen copy-cat in my opinion.
It’s probably my favourite sound/style since The River album. the organ... it just feels so familiar and like you‘re seeing an old friend, for the first time in a long time. It’s comforting. It evokes a warm feeling in my heart that I haven’t felt for a while.
The bootleg/demo-versions I've heard of “Janey Needs a Shooter” are very rough and unfinshed. The song sounds like it has great potential if he put some work into finish it. I'd love it if there's a proper reworked version of that song on the album. "Priest" and "Orphans" - wtf?! I can't see how that would fit into an album with new songs.
Email from Badlands saying they are working on a news update - look out for a further email around 1pm, which might mean something or might mean nothing...
If the songs fit well thematically, I don't have a problem with that. However, the writing style on the early songs are so distinct and different, that I'm guessing that any thematic similarity would have to be sought out rather than being apparent. If they're simply re-recorded and not re-written as well, of course. For all we know, Bruce could've just used the old titles.
This is my thinking, too - I’m all for reusing old songs, but only if they fit the album. High Hopes is a good collection of songs (The Wall, for example, is one of my favourite Bruce songs), but it isn’t a good album because it’s all over the place. All I want is for this to be an ALBUM - a cohesive body of work that is trying to tell us something, like Bruce has done so well so many times before!!
I'm of split mind regarding the - still - hypothetical release of older songs. Bruce has done it in some fashion (...) earlier, and Neil Young does it all the time, it seems (White Line on Ragged Glory (1990) is supposedly from 1976, for example). So, it's not unusual, but since we're so aware that these are songs written long ago, it's easy to assume writer's block on Bruce's part. Maybe he just liked the songs? And why shouldn't he, they're really good. I am, however, a bit wary of them being re-recorded, especially Janey. No way that Bruce can remotely match the circulating bootleg band version (if that's the one).
I seem to remember that We Take Care of Our Own was dropped very suddenly, can't remember any advance info. But then again, I might just not have been paying attention.
I have no idea where this is coming from, but there was a rumour about a single coming out today, album late October. It might had been fake news, so forgive me for my over excited Alf post.
I'm caught up in it, too. Just realized while waiting for this rumoured single to drop that the release hasn't even been officially announced. I don't remember any singles being released without an advance announcement.
@Jerseyfornia Perhaps this has been JLM's attempt at dropping a single completely unannounced like some of the young whippersnapper artists have done. But the cat got out of the bag... unlike said young artists who would've arranged the whole gambit electronically between themselves and management, Mr Landau probably had post it notes over his screen and desk
I've given it some thought, and I'm really looking forward to hearing "Shooter" and "Priest" (maybe for the first time 👀) and to find out what those nine new tracks sound like.
It's crazy. I would not rule out that this album and tracklist is something more intimate that has emerged in quarantine and not the new E Street album, which could remain in the bedroom. All weird. I think I'm more confused than excited. Too much uncertainty.
I do not understand anything. This song list is different from the other one. Does the album have two song lists? Is this second Tracks 2 list or the new album? Or the leaked cover is not the new album and it is Tracks 2. Help.
(Update: NJArts.net has learned other details about the album, including a track listing:
“One Minute You’re Here”“Letter to You”“Burnin Train”“Janey Needs a Shooter”“Last Man Standing”“The Power of Prayer”“House of a Thousand Guitars”“Rainmaker”“If I Was the Priest”“Ghosts”“Song for Orphans”“I’ll See You in My Dreams”
“Janey Needs a Shooter,” “If I Was the Priest” and “Song for Orphans” are new recordings of older songs not included on previous studio albums.
I am not sure if “House of a Thousand Guitars” is a cover of the Willie Nile song or an original with the same name.
All current E Street Band members play on the album, which was co-produced by Springsteen and Ron Aniello.
I can't wait to hear what my dear friend has to say to me on 10/23. He is such a wonderful friend and brother. He has shed light on a path before me and has helped me stand up straight amidst this hurricane. This storm, as it were. Its a story as old as time. How we brace for these rough seas. I look forward to hearing it with you all in our new online home.
E Street - using the recordings that were going on over the winter, then finished by Bruce in the studio over lockdown (who knows, maybe E Street members did some remote recording of their own?). This also would bring about the first E Street album without Clarence and Danny.
Solo - Bruce took lockdown to record a new solo album
Back in the day I would've changed the info on that "Adam Raised a Cain" for some good old fashioned trolling, but clearly I'm too old for that shit these days 😏
I've been given a scoop. To accompany "The House is on Fire" and his dig at The Jervi's "no wrecking ball could bring it down" line in "This House is Not For Sale", the title track, "Letter To You" will in fact be a pisstake about one of my favourite tracks from the 2013 album Because We Can, "Pictures of You":
I’ve always loved this photo. Not even just because it’s Bruce, but its just one of those remarkably iconic photos that tells a story. I’m not sure if it’ll have much relation to what’s on the album, but I feel like the snow is kind of fitting for this year. The best way I can describe 2020 is like a huge snowstorm, everything is so cold and dark, and you can’t see your hand stretched out in front of you or anywhere into the future. Just an abyss and not knowing what’s in front of you. It’s pretty scary.
I just remembered why they deleted the posts with the dates back in Belalake. I think their moto is that untill there's an official announcement, all valid information gets deleted. But they allow all fake news and speculation.
Don't worry, if this single and more information does not materialise by end of this week I'm going to start a 'No New Album Today' thread filled with more fake news and speculation than Donald Trump can shake a stick at
Is "House of a thousand guitars" a cover?
I love both the song and the video. I was determined not to listen to any of the new album in advance and wait until October 23rd, predictably though, I just couldn’t wait. Classic E Street Band sound.
found a screenshot of the lyric sheet for last man standing in the video. Got this so far:
Last Man Standing
Lights come up at the legion hall
pool cues go back up on the wall
you pack your guitar and disappear
with ? the ringing in the your ear!
a waitress cleans up the bar
you pack your amp into the car
---
the mike/wife
---
you wake up in the morning and find it
hard to believe somehow you are the last man standing
snakeskin ? sharkskin
custom heels on my black boots
I think The Klansman would have been a perfect previously unreleased song to include.
Given the winter photos and the inclusion of early 70's songs, why the hell isn't Winter Song on there? Good lil tune, and would have been perfect on this. Not that I'm complaining...well, I am, aren't I. But not much!
Accurate representation of me listening to Letter To You
Just listened/watched. Now in tears. Can’t tell you how good this makes me feel after a tough couple of months.
I just don't understand the mentality behind constantly demanding more Tracks-style unreleased songs, then complaining when some are included on an album.
I know we've been here for two, maybe three, weeks now, but this is a damn good way to launch a new forum.
Ha'way The Letters!
Wow. I love it.
It's not Western Stars quality writing or production. A little generic 90's or 00's Springsteen sound/production. Judging from the video it's a full blown E Street recording - a big plus for some people I guess. I prefer when he tries to push the envelope a little and tries something new and different.
Bruce has written a song dedicated to us fans... The letter to you is his almost 50 year dialogue with us.
Hence the re-recorded outtakes I'm guessing
It is a bit of a cross between Land of Hope and Dreams, and Better Days.
Album recorded live in five days in Bruce's home studio according to the press release. Great stuff!
https://youtu.be/AQyLEz0qy-g
The song is here!!!!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQyLEz0qy-g
The top banner on Springsteen's youtube channel is now "Letter to you" theme, but still no video or song there.
Edit: video up!
OOOOOOH MYYYY GOOOOSSHHH I AM HYPED!!!!
E STREET BAND!!!!!!!!!
Also does anyone have Apple Music?? I see there is a official video for 'Letter To You' as well!!!!
Although it will probably appear on youtube etc. as well very soon.
I AM JUST SO HAPPY!!!!
BRUUUUUUCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

23rd October- Feast of the Holy Redeemer. How apt. Bruce come save us!
The apple-snippet lowered my expectations a bit. The River vibes/sound makes it sound like an out-take or a song by a Springsteen copy-cat in my opinion.
Only on Apple music?
It’s probably my favourite sound/style since The River album. the organ... it just feels so familiar and like you‘re seeing an old friend, for the first time in a long time. It’s comforting. It evokes a warm feeling in my heart that I haven’t felt for a while.
From the snatch I heard distinctly ESB sound. Good enough for me. Great to hear Mighty Max's drums again.
I love it. I cried listening to it. It was just so needed
Need to give it a few listens, not great, but good is my first reaction!
I just can hear a few seconds 😫
Got it - thanks!
My thoughts following this first listen are considerably better to those following "Hello Sunshine".
I mean, aye, I'm not currently on a comedown from the greatest cinematic experience of my life, but still, it's good to enjoy a song.
Where is it playing right now???
Where I can find the song?
It’s okays
Also, for what it’s worth, that track listing has also been confirmed by Apple Music
Wonder if that’s Charlie?
ORGAN
Bloody hell it is fantastic, very Hearthbreakers-esque
THIS MIGHT END UP NOT BEING WELL RECEIVED BUT MY GOD I LOVE IT
THEY'RE BACK!

My intuitive reaction to the album cover - photo in the snow- was Leonard Cohen. The title also...
Email from Badlands saying they are working on a news update - look out for a further email around 1pm, which might mean something or might mean nothing...
I am interested as to how the old songs will fit thematically on the album. Also wondering whether they will be sped up in the new arrangements.
I'm of split mind regarding the - still - hypothetical release of older songs. Update from the future... nada, zilch, bugger all, no new Bruce compositions of any sort in any configuration so far today.
No Bruce compositions from any previous millennium sighted either
It's after midnight and the moonlight's let me down.
Three songs from the early 70s? That's downright weird.
I seem to remember that We Take Care of Our Own was dropped very suddenly, can't remember any advance info. But then again, I might just not have been paying attention.
I've got no idea about anything any more, except it's a very nice new picture in the snow...
I have no idea where this is coming from, but there was a rumour about a single coming out today, album late October. It might had been fake news, so forgive me for my over excited Alf post.
Hasn't every previous single release been officially announced beforehand? Why would we get a single today without an official announcement?
A NEW Sprinsteen song TODAY...
So when today are we expecting the new song to drop?
Just in from work, caught up on this thread and waiting for the new song to drop.
Three songs from the 70s demos on the album? Interesting.
I just saw the track list and I am so excited, My god.
I've given it some thought, and I'm really looking forward to hearing "Shooter" and "Priest" (maybe for the first time 👀) and to find out what those nine new tracks sound like.

Nils doesn't want to give us information.
I wish this album sounded a bit like classic and angry rock. I need some energy in these times. But whatever it is, I trust Bruce.
Nothing officially revealed yet, but people out there are whining already. Some things never change. 🙄
last man standing is my bet
It's crazy. I would not rule out that this album and tracklist is something more intimate that has emerged in quarantine and not the new E Street album, which could remain in the bedroom. All weird. I think I'm more confused than excited. Too much uncertainty.
I think the one thing that seems pretty definite at the moment is that within the next 24 hours we should have all the answers
So the guy who said The House is on fire as a single and the other guy who even made a review of the entire album in the old forum, is it made up?
Song For Orphans is on the archive release of Trenton '05
I do not understand anything. This song list is different from the other one. Does the album have two song lists? Is this second Tracks 2 list or the new album? Or the leaked cover is not the new album and it is Tracks 2. Help.
I'm not on Twitter, so half of this thread is a mystery to me at this point...
I really hope Bruce's baby isn't coming in on track 3.
(Update: NJArts.net has learned other details about the album, including a track listing:

Miami Steve bringin' the gold! https://twitter.com/StevieVanZandt/status/1303805468205350913
44 days.
Thematically, personal or current events?
I know it's supposed to be the E Street album, but the cover looks like an urban version of WS.
Pretty excited about this!
Is this true? Oh, what a wonderfull day.
anybody gonna pre order from that record shop? lol
I believe its an E Street record.
What are we thinking:

I'm overly excited. Love this so much.

It's his album of Christmas songs 😂
Right, can everyone stop being cryptic and tell me in words of one syllable exactly what is going on?
Thanks.
And it really goes without saying, but let's see if this new place can stand strong against an inevitable crash 😁
A Dune trailer/new films to watch, a new Springsteen single/album, podcasts galore, blog reviews, real life, etc.
2020's upping the overwhelming game 😂

Sounds like Stan is on the secret notification list that a few people here are on. Not me, obviously. 😊
Stan posted on facebook that tomorrow will be a good day for us fans.
I just remembered why they deleted the posts with the dates back in Belalake. I think their moto is that untill there's an official announcement, all valid information gets deleted. But they allow all fake news and speculation.
I'm not trying to disrupt your code of silence, but... is this really happening? 😅
i want it and i want it now
Based on that screenshot GL post, the previously leaked date of 10 September for the single appears correct then?
