I have been slacking at listening to most of the European shows. Not a lack of apprecation for them, but honestly some of the commentary elsewhere on the internet just has me starting to ignore this whole leg of the tour. I can't get bogged down in that. When my overenthusiastic joy at finally getting to see Bruce live after a lifetime of dreaming about is continually met with derision that "this tour sucks" or "ot's not a real E Street show", or whatever else people have said, it's hard to stay engaged.
I'm beyond excited, and I have been building that more by listening to older bootlegs, but this review reminded me that Gothenburg 2 is definitely one I should add to my "to-play" list while I impatiently count down the return to North American touring!
Ignore the nay-sayers. It's different for sure, but still the best show (x8) I'll see all year. If it is a magic trick then it's a trick worth every penny/cent I've put in his pocket.
I'm collecting the tour releases, but not avidly listening to them. One reason is with the setlist as static as it is, there's no reason to listen to each or most shows. I cruise to the tour debuts or select favorite songs to hear how they sound currently, to enjoy them, to remember. The other reason is it doesn't appear the setlist is gong to change much between now and my father-daughter date in November, so I'd like to not be sick of it by then.
I've said all that just to say that I just listened to the intro to Racing In The Street from Gothenberg simply to experience the crowd's reaction. It was as satisfying as listening to the entire song, which I'm about to do now.
We're older. We've changed. But Bruce is still out there doing what he does and so are the fans. God, we're lucky enough just to have that.
I guess I posted the #1 review in the other thread. No matter.
As I've said at the end of this blog, next on the site won't be Dublin (they're coming, don't worry) but rather Paris #1, which will be a different kind of review.
Thanks! I've been asking myself that question for two months, hahahaha, and what I seem to be telling myself is that if they'd just released one show, I'd have listened to that loads, so the fact there are twenty-seven more that vary in at least one way is great.
Perhaps an even better answer though is what I discovered when reviewing the first leg of The River Tour 2016. It might feel like a challenge to listen to the same songs over and over, but the music can really get under your skin. I wondered if I'd be sick of The River, but I go back to those full album performances so frequently even now. It hits different each time.
And in case you close the page before reading this bit
I want to say thank you for following along with my coverage of the first two months – whether you’ve read every review or just this one – and I hope you enjoyed what I’ve had to say. I didn’t expect to be writing about the ‘same’ setlist as much as I have since February, but as was the case in my reviews of the first North American leg of The River Tour 2016, these twenty-eight shows have further allowed me to appreciate how music can hit differently on different days under different contexts. So, I’ve really enjoyed this experience and I look forward to seeing how this setlist unfolds in Europe. I’ll be back in the coming days with the first two parts of my Guide to the 2023 International Tour – with ratings – and by the time they’re published all eyes will be on the Estadi OlÃmpic LluÃs Companys!
I really liked the way they did it in 2009, as seen on the Hyde Park DVD. Classic piece of Bruce 'dark lyrics to lighter music' that he is so good at, and sequencing it between Seeds and Youngstown in the 'recession' pack gave it a bit more gravitas if you are listening to more than just the 'woo hoos'.
But I agree that adding the horns, and playing it stand alone outside of any other context in the set, makes it more just a party piece which just happens to have a darker narrative. I have to admit to still having a toe tapping fondness for it, but
that song should amount to a bit more than just toe tapping.
In general, I love how he can change the mood of a song by rearranging it. Or sometimes it's just a slight alternation in his voice and how he sings, and the song evolves into something else than its original version.
Johnny is just not one of those examples. I hear the uplift version as an insult to the character. Maybe I'm too rigid, but it feels wrong.
Not yet. I wanted Tampa to have a record of the first one back (plus all the new songs) and was so blown away by how good it was that none of the setlist tweaks so far have been enough to buy another.
Mind you, us non North American Neanderthals are being screwed royally right now. $12 bucks right now in the States and Canada will get you a Nugs subscription that now includes streaming of all these shows, as well as the entire archive series. Here in Oz (and as I understand it, everywhere else also), I can't even stream the stuff I've bought (which I could before the Sony deal) much less anything I haven't bought.
So if I want a pristine professional Backstreets with the new interlude (not done in Tampa), I need to buy another show. So I might wait a bit for some other changes also.
Happy to have HOATG from that first show... shame it's now (seemingly) gone, although Last Man straight into Backstreets with the interlude in the latter tying it all together is very effective.
This worked for me (in the uk), and I couldn’t listen to my bought shows before…get a subscription, download the shows (cloud icon next to the cover photo in each show)…listen to the whole archive series…hope it works for you in Oz.
I have to tell you that before I read the entire piece, I skipped ahead to see what you wrote about Burnin' Train so I could decide if I wanted to read your review or kick your butt.
This really is as good as I thought they sounded on the flimsy FB feed we had of the show a few days ago.
Question, though. I've listened to the first third on headphones. On Ghosts, Bruce introduces the Professor and I can hear him noodling away with that classic piano sound (a bit low in the mix for my taste, but still) in the right channel.
But in the intros for Prove It and Out In The Street, there is a much more prominent electric sounding keyboard playing the riffs in what seems to be slightly left of centre in the mix. Does Charlie play these parts now? Has this been the case for a while, or is this new? I always thought / assumed Roy played these parts also.
Hopefully I'll be able to get my full review written soon enough, but for now a short review you wouldn't see on the blog. HOLY FUCKING SHIT I'M HAVING THE TIME OF MY LIFE!!!!
Amazed at the sound quality off the bat...of course I played Burnin Train, then See you in My Dreams...my goodness he has a tight connection to my heart. This band is good now, imagine after Europe...maybe I will go if a show is close by. But the bootlegs will bridge the gap.

Straight to Burnin' Train.
