It was OK. Seems to have moved towards a guitar driven ‘rock’ approach, rather than the more soulful presentation I remember from a few years back. A pity as I thought at the time he had the pipes for the latter, if not the quality of material. The ’quieter’, more restrained songs worked better for these ears.
All imho, of course. Other opinions are available!
Fantastic weather on Lewis today! I think I have fallen a bit in love with the place. I said to Mr J that if Liz Truss wins the next election I might just have to move up here and pretend the real world isn't happening!
Cracking pics! There’s a great black house museum at Gearrannan on the west side of Lewis that we visited in May. Was that where you took your pic? Really interesting old fella was there working a loom. Happy to chat all day! If it’s drench not a bad place to pass an hour or two.
No, it was one Black House on its own which was supposed to be closed but the door was open so we wandered in! One more day on Lewis, we plan to go to go to Port nan Giuran via Knock. Friday morning we are in the early ferry to Ullapool, staying overnight in Onich and Kirkby Lonsdale before heading home. It's been a great trip.
Hope the weather is kinder to you tomorrow. Great wee cafe in Ullapool on Argyle Street, Cult Cafe, if you need a bite before heading south. Have a safe drive home.
Tbh I was pretty dismissive of them for a long while, and really only went back to them after enjoying Fallon solo records. ‘59 Sound, American Slang and Handwritten are regular plays nowadays.
Dunno why they didn’t click initially, beyond being a bit put off by the overhyped Springsteen association and post-Clash punk aspirations. At least as I saw it.
See also Frank Turner, who remains to this day a mystery to me. 🤷♂️
It was a great 10 days for the city. We went twice to athletics and the atmosphere was amazing. Spent one day in the city centre, when we visited Perry, and again a wonderful atmosphere. A real escape from the real world but also made me think what this country could be.
We used to go to athletics a couple of times a year, including indoors at Brum, until our lads interest faded….☹️ In all honesty though, good TV coverage such as that offered by the Beeb is pretty hard to beat. Youre there on both the start AND the finish lines, and up close in the field events too. And yes, I did shed a tear when Milnathort lass Laura Muir won her 1500 gold! ❤️🏴
For atmosphere and drama we find the velodrome is pretty hard to beat, and we still occasionally go to events, though it’s a bit of a schlepp to go to the far side of London and back. Like the 2012 ‘legacy’, I fear it’ll be thrown away, particularly if MadNad remains in situ.GA are at O2 Academy.
We were there for Laura, she is an absolute delight!
Dave's mad keen on athletics (its what he does) but I don't often go with him. I have been to a couple of indoor events at the NIA, or whatever its called these days, and they have been really good for getting a good view of everything, more so than the Alex Stadium, but I wouldn't have missed seeing the games in my city for the world! The Beeb did a great job and, of course, you get to go from event to event, unlike being in the stadium though.
Like you, I suspect the legacy will not be as we would like...
Festival of Motoring in Stratford this weekend. Cars don't really do anything for me but it is a popular event.
My dad has a car just like this. He really loved it but it did about 12 miles to the gallon and when petrol prices shot up (in the mid 70's?) he couldn't afford to drive anywhere in it! He sold it and bought a mini.
I suspect these will be lost on anyone who doesn’t follow Graysons Art Club on Channel 4. Available on catch-up in the UK, if not elsewhere. Visited the Series 2 Exhibition in Bristol. It was ace!
Grayson Perry was someone who I found intently irritating until I went to an exhibition of his tapestries a few years ago and I changed my mind completely in the course of an hour.
That exhibition looks really interesting, I especially like Alan Measles.
Indeed it is Basher himself. And he was kind enough to sign my copy of his So It Goes 45. Stiff Records 1st single from 1976, catalogue number BUY 1 for all you vinyl nerds. Excellent show from a guy who doesn’t get enough credit for the quality of his songwriting.
@MagicRatAFC That'd be Do It Yourself. Norman Watt Roy is still out there, saw him most recently playing bass with Wilko Johnson. Really puts in a shift and has hands the size of shovels!
If you can find a copy at a sensible price this is worth a purchase, assuming its not already on your shelf of course:
@Walkerinthesun At one time we had the first 100 Stiff singles, Mr J was quite the collector back then.
We saw a few of the Stiff tours, one I remember at Birmingham Town Hall where there were quite a lot of them in the bar and getting autographs, that would have been in 1977. There was a 'train tour' a year or two later, where I think they all travelled round the country by train!
We also saw Ian Drury perform in a play at the RSC, Jim Cartwright's 'The Road', which was very memorable.
Had a brief visit to the Wallace Collection in that there London. Definitely worth a return visit, especially as it’s a haven of peace just a short walk from the wasteland that is Oxford Street.
@whispered secret The centre of the town and over towards the park entrance didn’t seem to be showing any obvious signs of what’s very apparent elsewhere. The affluent remain so, and it is prime south Cotswolds after all. Underclass well concealed.
Sorry if I‘ve inadvertently caused offence there. How do you define the difference? Continue my education! On a related aside, every time you post re the club I hear Coma Girl in my head. Is this weird? Maybe that’s where it came from?
@Walkerinthesun No offense taken at all. Gang is a term the government uses too loosely and frequently to infringe on the rights of MC members, and of clubs to exist at all.
On the MC set, we draw a distinction between organized club-sanctioned crime and crime engaged in by individual members. By that definition, are there some motorcycle clubs that are gangs? Yes, but I won't refer to them as such, for what I think are obvious reasons. The main one being you don't talk about another club's business if it doesn't involve your club.
Are there criminals among the members of my MC nationwide? I'm sure there are. Is my nationwide club involved in criminal activity? No, it isn't. In fact, our west coast chapters are currently involved in a dispute and purge over some chapters bringing in prospects and patching in members of street gangs.
I know when most people see us, they think we're a gang. We ride bikes, we wear the same cut, we stick together. It's through the public actions of our club and the good we try to do for the community that we combat that perception.
Are we rougher than some other types of social clubs? Sure. We frequent a rough environment where outlaws do exist and pose a danger to everyone. We're all just regular people from all walks of life who live a lifestyle a little outside of society's norm. Nine times out of ten, if a civilian is interacting with an MC or an MC member, it's a good interaction. We're not out there raising hell like the police would have everyone believe.
Some pics from the Kurt Jackson Biodiversity exhibition at the Natural History Museum, Oxford. Well worth an hour of your time if you’re visiting Oxford.
Annoyingly we were in Oxford yesterday to see the Pissarro exhibition at the Ashmolean, which we enjoyed, but we could easily have taken in another one!
Higher than normal rainfall over the last few days due to the tropical storm out over Madagascar affecting our weather patterns.
This is a concrete path next to the river... Going to take a while to clean this up...
Because we have informal settlements next to the river, when it floods, a huge amount of rubbish and debris ends up on the banks. The point of these photos is not that, but to show you the 2.5 meter water monitor who was trying to find his way through the mess. Look to the left of the square appliance.
@whispered secret I'm sorry they aren't great pics. He is very camouflaged. Walking from left to right in the photos, in the second one his head has just gone around the square appliance. He was a huge old boy, lumbering slowly with his forked tongue darting out his mouth....
Meet Andi, our new tomcat, a 5-year-old shelter cat of sweet disposition, previous owner died but obviously treated him well because, in spite of weighing 14plus pounds, he is a "real pussicat", loving, trusting - all the things our previous two sadly were not.
I'm glad you got another cat. He looks like a smart guy and he's got the somewhat stern eyes I love on a cat. He looks to have made himself at home with you.
The last one from Cornwall. This is on the village green in the village we are staying in, reflected into the village pond, with a lovely old church behind.
One last picture of Lizzie. She had to be put to sleep yesterday after a prolonged illness that got steadily worse. The ulcer in her mouth kept growing, and you could see how it affected her brain and her balance. Yesterday, she just kept falling over, looking surprised and sad and finally defeated.
During the 15 years she lived with us, she steadfastly refused to sit on anyone's lap. Her first year in neglected conditions had scarred her and her sister's behaviour. When she got ill, however, she suddenly needed close contact and could not be kept away (not that we tried). Now she is buried under the walnut tree alongside her sister Emma who preceeded her almost three years ago. Sleep well, little Lizzie.
If I had taken any photos and if I could post them, I would have been able to share Autumn in The Cotswolds! Fantastic walk with blue sky and beautiful colours yesterday, but you are going to have to take my word for it!
Here's a few more music related pics, mostly from The Beatles Story. Thought it would be a bit tacky & cheesy, but was actually really well done. If you've read a bit about the Beatles you won't be learning much new, but despite this we thoroughly enjoyed it. Recommended.
I've added a few explanatory notes here and there.
George's 1st guitar.
The Holy Grail for Beatles record collectors.
I have vague recollections of dancing around the front room as a child wearing a Beatles wig and singing Yellow Submarine......
Acetate from YS.
YS memorabilia. Have the LEGO model (middle left) and the Hot Wheels one (bottom centre), both of which are easy to find. The Corgi model has gone thru a number of iterations, and I keep looking at them on eBay..... Original red-hatch versions are v expensive in good condition. Later models bit more affordable. The figures were great. Knew they existed, but never actually seen them. Tempting!
The Epiphone played on the Apple rooftop!
Hofner decorated by Klaus Voorman.
Lennons white room, complete with the specs.
Handwritten set list from George's last concert in Japan.
Billy Fury.
When I was a spotty teen sitting in a nowhere town miles from anywhere I used to devour the NME every week. Eric's almost always featured on the touring schedule of the bands I was desperate to see. Thank God the Clash played the Kinema in Dunfermline......
@Walkerinthesun Oh I love that! Is it in one of the cathedrals?
I had to visit Liverpool for work several years ago, often going to Southport the next day (the worst job I ever had, but that's another story!) so I would stay overnight and try to visit a few of the landmarks, but I never made it to the cathedral. I did do the ferry though!
@whispered secret It's the Anglian Cathedral that sits in an elevated position overlooking the city. Some really nice modern stained glass. The neon is by Tracy Emin: “The Church has always been a place, for me, for contemplation. I wanted to make something for Liverpool Cathedral about love and the sharing of love. Love is a feeling which we internalise; a feeling very hard to explain. I thought it would be nice for people to sit in the Cathedral and have a moment to contemplate the feelings of love, it’s something we just don’t have enough time to think about and I hope this work creates this space in time.”
Worth a visit when you get back there.
There was also a fabulous embroidered bishops cope on display. A few details below:
St Barnabas Church, Jericho, Oxford. Very atmospheric for sure, but never really happy with the sound quality there. Not St John the Evangelist Church where we went to first, nice and early to get a good seat. Cue a quick dash across town, stony silence in the car, to get to the right venue. Amazingly got in the 3rd row so we were talking by the time we walked back to the car.
I haven’t put up a pic of my little granddaughter in awhile here…so what the heck, here’s a recent pic. 3 years old already…
Gossips, liars, thieves, spies.
@whispered secret
I'd maybe try a winter on Lewis before making any commitments.....
Very good coffee and blueberry muffin in Cult Cafe - thanks for the recommendation @Walkerinthesun .
Fantastic weather on Lewis today! I think I have fallen a bit in love with the place. I said to Mr J that if Liz Truss wins the next election I might just have to move up here and pretend the real world isn't happening!
No defo dreich.
There's supposed to be a cracking chipper in Ullapool.
I'm ashamed to say, despite living about an hour's drive away, it's years since I've been to Ullapool
Dreich, not drench! Tho I suppose if it is dreich there’s a fair chance you will be drenched
Cracking pics! There’s a great black house museum at Gearrannan on the west side of Lewis that we visited in May. Was that where you took your pic? Really interesting old fella was there working a loom. Happy to chat all day! If it’s drench not a bad place to pass an hour or two.
Where to next?
Cracking pics AJ, some hidden gems of beaches on Lewis.
Haven't been to Mull in north of twenty five years but it was a cracking wee place.
Herself & himself on Mull.
Tobermory - we enjoyed better weather on Mull!
A beach on Lewis
Inside a Black House on Lewis. Some people were living in these dwellings as recently as the 60's!
Rasaay on Saturday
Skye on Sunday
Its wet and windy on Lewis, so I might as well try sharing a few photos of the trip so far! Butt of Lewis yesterday.
Our cabin on
I can see them now, they're lovely.
And being distracted by a fish supper (you're in Scotland remember....) is a decent excuse.
Ok, so I have no idea what's going on!! I can see the picture I think I uploaded on my iPad but not on my phone!!
@whispered secret Mebbe it's me but I can't see that pic.
Iona today.
Here’s a few more from this morning. Killing time waiting on the significant other.
Not my efforts! Cake shop has ‘pop-star’ theme this month. Amy Winehouse is my favourite, I think.
What would you do if you came across a street sign like this? 😁
My little Granddaughter…time flies.
I stopped by the lakeshore on my way home today, but it's algae bloom time.
The sky was still blue.
@Walkerinthesun 59 Sound is great album as is American Slang.
I love the debut also, but Handwritten was where I parted company really.
That album never did it for me at all.
@walkerinthesun Curious to hear how the Gaslight gig is.
I loved their first three albums but reckon they lost their way after that.
I saw them live three times and thought they were average at best.
Birmingham's Bull!
Wow!
Aye, the beaches out west are a bit decent.
If you show me yours I'll show you mine.....
Sunset in Cumbria
Young contemporary ceilidh band Heron Valley. Spur of the moment, while we had the evening to kill. Top fun.
Too young to be Caercaille.......
Too few fiddles for Blazin' Fiddles.....
I'm stumped.
Time to get yer heuch on! Absolutely no chance with this one @SteveInJoburg
Gig night……
Stopped for a snap on yesterdays bike ride. Hannington Hall, dating back to 1600’s.
Beach in San Sebastian. I actually went in the sea...
Sunset in San Sebastian!
That looks like Percy?
Our family car in the 1960's was just like this - even the same colour!
Festival of Motoring in Stratford this weekend. Cars don't really do anything for me but it is a popular event.

Woven rug. Love it!
The next might actually be ‘best in show’:
GP’s project for the series. Hard to get an image of the whole piece due to case reflection.
By degree qualified ceramicist Johnny Vegas:
Another GP piece.
I suspect these will be lost on anyone who doesn’t follow Graysons Art Club on Channel 4. Available on catch-up in the UK, if not elsewhere. Visited the Series 2 Exhibition in Bristol. It was ace!
Let’s start with Alan Measles…..
After Diego Rivera…….
Immediately thought of the Bash Street Kids……
Just to make sure my ability to post pictures wasn't a fluke - Hyde Park today.
I had Nick Lowe?
That's nae the Bard is it?
My new phone lets me post pictures
again!!!
Lovely pictures.
A few phone pics from our Easter Day stroll:
One for the culture vultures.
Had a brief visit to the Wallace Collection in that there London. Definitely worth a return visit, especially as it’s a haven of peace just a short walk from the wasteland that is Oxford Street.
Trying to get out and about and familiarise myself with our new locality. Couple of pics from Cirencester on what was a glorious spring day.
Tbf you have introduced me to motorcycle gang culture, tho' I'm not inclined to get personally acquainted with it.....
Some pics from the Kurt Jackson Biodiversity exhibition at the Natural History Museum, Oxford. Well worth an hour of your time if you’re visiting Oxford.

Lucky Andi 😍

Happy!
Messing about with the “Pano” option on my new phone in The Lake District last week.
The last one from Cornwall. This is on the village green in the village we are staying in, reflected into the village pond, with a lovely old church behind.
And one more rough sea!
A really lovely church in St Just-in-Roseland had a light show yesterday evening, it was really stunning.
And finally, my baby on the beach.
Interesting rock pool (Dawson might like it!)
A calmer day today, with some sun!!
A few pictures from Cornwall
Yesterday - a rough sea!
Some pics from my year end break in the foothills of the mountains in Zululand.

Rarely in Oxford these days, but sister & b-I-l popped over during their short break in the smoke for a guided tour. Quite pleasant in the autumn sun.
Not quite as pretty as BEB's, but they will do!
and the lock, unfortunately without a boat going through it
one at a time then...
I got fed up of being unable to post pictures from my iPad, so hopefully these will work from the lap top.
They were taken on my walk along the canal tow path, which runs right by my house.
If I had taken any photos and if I could post them, I would have been able to share Autumn in The Cotswolds! Fantastic walk with blue sky and beautiful colours yesterday, but you are going to have to take my word for it!
Autumn in Cumbria.
For anyone who has watched the Netflix series Penguin Town, this should look familiar...
Me and one of the Club brothers were at a used tire shop today having a tire put on a homeless guy's van. This motel is across the street.
Me: Seems a little racist or at least exploitative.
Homeless guy: Oh, no. They changed the name.
Me: From what?
Homeless guy: It used to be called the Teepee Motel.
Sigh.
Here’s the subject of most of my pics these days….
Perfect riding weather.
I feel a trip to Liverpool coming on. Great photos, thanks.
